The Mt Sopris Run-Off takes place in Carbondale, CO and offers two distances – 10-Miles and 28k. Historically this race has been a part of the Town of Carbondale’s Mountain Fair Weekend in late July. In 2026, the race will take place on Sunday, May 17th as part of a growing trail running festival weekend in the Roaring Fork Valley. The race will feature two distances – 10-miles and 28k – both utilizing the iconic “Up & Over” single track trail in a point-to-point race.  The 28k will start at 7:30 a.m. and the 10 miler will start at 8:00 a.m. Both races will start at Flying Dog Ranch in Carbondale, and end at Rock Bottom Ranch in Basalt.

The 10-Miler

  • From the start line at Flying Dog Ranch runners will run up Prince Creek Road (pavement and dirt) for 1.75 miles before diverting onto Prince Creek Trail (single track) for 0.35 miles then turning left Christmas Tree (single track) for 0.50 miles.
  • At the top of Christmas Tree, runners will have reached 2.60 miles and steadily climbed 725’.
  • From the top of Christmas Tree, runners will stay straight as they begin a northward traverse on North Porcupine (single track) for 2.7 miles before the trail turns into Outie (single track).
  • After a gentle 1.0 mile climb up Outie runners will take a sharp left hand turn onto Buckhorn (single track) at mile 6.30.
  • From the start of Buckhorn, runners will enjoy a flowy and smooth cruise down through sage fields losing 500’ of elevation over the next 2.4 miles.
  • At the junction of Buckhorn and Buckhorn Traverse, the 10-miler runners will stay straight on Buckhorn continuing the descend another 500’ via multiple buttery switchbacks for 1.3 miles until intersecting with the Rio Grande Trail (pavement).
  • To get to the finish, runners will take a right on the Rio Grande Trail before crossing the dirt road and entering Rock Bottom Ranch for a sprint to the finish line.
  •  AID STATIONS:  There will be two aid stations on the 10-mile course.  The first one will be mile 2.60 at the top of Christmas Tree trail.  The second will be at mile 8.6 at the intersection of Buckhorn and Buckhorn Traverse.  Aid stations to provide water, electrolyte mix, and several carbohydrate options (gels, chews, etc)

The 28k

  • From the top of Christmas Tree, runners will stay straight as they begin a northward traverse on North Porcupine (single track) for 2.7 miles before the trail turns into Outie (single track).
  • After a gentle 1.0 mile climb up Outie runners will take a sharp left hand turn onto Buckhorn (single track) at mile 6.30.
  • From the start of Buckhorn, runners will enjoy a flowy and smooth cruise down through sage fields losing 500’ of elevation over the next 2.4 miles.
  • At the junction of Buckhorn and Buckhorn Traverse, the 28k runners will turn right onto Buckhorn Traverse (single track) for 4.0 miles ending with 450’ climb over the last 2.0 miles to get to the Glassier Trail (single track).
  • The finishing stretch will be fast with a 2.3 mile descent down the buttery switchbacks of Glassier losing 800’ of elevation followed by a slightly downhill 1.5 mile section on the Rio Grande Trail (pavement) before crossing the dirt road and entering Rock Bottom Ranch for a sprint to the finish line.
  • AID STATIONS:  There will be three aid stations on the 28k course.  The first one will be mile 2.60 at the top of Christmas Tree trail.  The second will be at mile 8.6 at the intersection of the Buckhorn and Buckhorn Traverse trails.  The third will be at mile 12.7 at the top of Glassier trail.  Aid stations to provide water, electrolyte mix, and several carbohydrate options (gels, chews, etc)
  • CUT OFF:  All 28k runners must pass through the second aid station at mile 8.6  by 10:00am (2:30 from start time).  If cutoff is missed, runners will continue along the 10-mile course to the finish line.
